(VIDEO): The Middle East Boils Over: A Brief on the Israel-Iran Escalation

We review the events that led to Thursday night's attack, unpack historical and moral debates and consider what it means moving forward.

Just days ago, it seemed like the biggest headlines of the week were Trump’s trade deal with China or RFK Jr.’s bold moves at Health and Human Services. But on Thursday night, everything shifted. Israel launched a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Iran retaliated yesterday, and now Israel, with U.S. support, is defending itself. The situation is tense and evolving quickly.

Our video discussion attempts to make sense of it all, examining key context and questions, including:

  • What set the stage for Thursday’s events
The moves and decisions that led to the boiling over

  • The moral debate behind the attack
We analyze whether Israel’s actions (and U.S. support) can be justified, exploring perspectives from both sides of the argument.

  • What history teaches us about moments like this
We learn from history so we don’t repeat it. But in learning from history we can also be imprisoned by it. We consider lessons worth applying, as well as distinctions unique to this particular situation

  • What happens next?
We break down potential outcomes—from the best-case scenarios to the most worrying possibilities.

And finally, we take brief mystical route: could these events align with a big Catholic prophecy?

Please check out the video, let me know your own thoughts and everyone be well this weekend!

I wrote a novel back in 2003 that was set in a fictional Irish Catholic neighborhood in postwar Boston. It’s still online at Amazon, in both print and electronic formats. The novel celebrates Catholic teaching, old-school populist politics (in an era when the Democratic Party was home to my kind of voter), the Boston Red Sox and Notre Dame football. In the worlds of faith, sports, and politics, it captures what I believe.

I’ve also set up a “tip jar” over at the website Buy Me a Coffee. If you find an article or video particularly informative or enjoyable, you can leave an electronic tip.

Finally, while I’ve gotten active in politics because events of the last five years have shown that we have to protect ourselves, my first interest remains sports. I’ve got a nostalgia website, OUAT Sports, which is regularly updated with historical articles and includes a blog on current games. If you or someone you love is a sports fan, bookmark the site, and sign up for the free Substack associated with it
